Group Wins Millennium Peace Prize for Women

Thursday, March 8, 2001, marked a momentous occasion as International Alert and UNIFEM hosted a gala dinner to honor the winners of the first Millennium Peace Prize for Women. Inclusive Security: Women Waging Peace Colombian Member Rocio Pineda was one of the recipients. Attending with a delegation from her organization, Ruta Pacifica de la Mujeres Movement, Rocio joined such notable company as Women in Black, Asma Jahangir, Hina Jilani, and Flora Brovina in this important recognition of women's efforts in achieving peace.

Ruta Pacifica de la Mujeres has been a key player in the efforts to resolve the decades-old conflict in Colombia, interacting with national and international policy shapers to ensure that the expertise of Colombian women is integrated into peace discussions. Founded in 1996, this national network works to reduce violence and reaffirm solidarity in Colombia.
