Policy Highlights in the Americas

Americas Regional Meeting
Guatemala, September 2002

Inter-American Commission on Women
The Inter-American Commission on Women of the Organization of American States (OAS) invited Hattie Babbitt, director of Waging’s Washington office and former US Ambassador to the OAS, to address their August 2002 meeting to explore an Inter-American counterpart to UN Resolution 1325. The November 2002 conference of the defense ministers of the Americas, hosted by Chile, passed a statement that includes excellent language advancing the issue of women, peace, and security. Waging is now working with the Hemispheric Security Committee of the OAS to include similar language in the final political declaration in October 2003.

The Americas First Ministerial Meeting on the Advancement of Women
In April 2000, the Organization of American States held the First Ministerial Meeting on the Advancement of Women in the Americas in Washington, DC. Inclusive Security: Women Waging Peace, represented by delegates from Colombia and Mexico, was the only non-governmental organization that participated in meetings with presidents, foreign ministers, and ministers of women's affairs of 37 countries in the Americas.
