WOMEN PEACE BUILDERS FROM THE AMERICAS
CALL FOR INCLUSION IN PEACE PROCESSES

ANTIGUA, GUATEMALA   SEPTEMBER 3 - 4, 2002

As stories of war and terror continue to dominate headlines and political agendas worldwide, women peace builders will meet with policymakers from South and North America to offer innovative alternatives to traditional attempts at conflict resolution that are not working. Members of the Inclusive Security: Women Waging Peace network from Guatemala, Colombia, and the United States will call for the full implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325, a major policy statement that urges all member states to include women in the peace process at the local, regional, and international levels.

Dr. Swanee Hunt, former US Ambassador to Austria and the Chair of Inclusive Security: Women Waging Peace, will lead this unique forum where women peace builders will propose innovative strategies and a new paradigm of inclusive security that aims to stop violent conflict by bridging ethnic, religious, and cultural divides. Not only in positions of formal power, but also working at the grassroots level where peace agreements are implemented and lived out, Inclusive Security: Women Waging Peace leaders offer a valuable perspective that is too often excluded from official processes.

Events open to the media include:

  • Panel Discussion with members of Inclusive Security: Women Waging Peace, Contributions of Women in Creating and Sustaining Peace, facilitated by Dr. Swanee Hunt, Tuesday, September 3, 14:00 - 15:30, Casa Santa Domingo Hotel, 3a Calle Oriente No. 28, Antigua, Guatemala.
  • Policy Roundtables, discussions between policymakers and women peace builders, focusing on action to ensure women's full participation in the peace process, Wednesday, September 4, 14:00 - 18:00, US Ambassador's residence, 20 Calle, 4-30, Zona 10, Guatemala City, Guatemala.
