The Research Symposium
The launch of the Waging
initiative in 1999 included a three-day research symposium involving delegates,
practitioners, and academics from a broad range of disciplines. The second
annual research symposium was held in November 2000, with a focus on reviewing
current scholarship and fostering a lively dialogue among participants who
straddle academic/practitioner lines and who represent a variety of political
positions. The symposia have attracted over 100 of the leading scholars on
gender and conflict resolution, and have resulted in:
- an international database
of women in peace building from across disciplines;
- case studies highlighting
women's roles in peace building and conflict resolution;
- an extensive online
bibliography of resources on gender, conflict, and peace building;
- online articles on gender
studies, conflict resolution, and peace building; and
- the establishment of
ethical guidelines for researchers in the field of gender and peace building.
Waging convened a consortium
of researchers for ongoing collaboration during the third annual Harvard
collquium in November 2001. The main focus of the symposium was to facilitate
discussions about the work of women peace builders on the frontlines of conflict
areas. The symposium was chaired by Rita Manchanda, a Waging core member
and a program executive for the South Asia Forum for Human Rights in Kathmandu,
Nepal.
