The 2000 Research Symposium

The second annual Research Symposium took place during the 2000 November colloquium. Delegates joined researchers and academics interested in the relationship of women, peace building, and research for three days of in-depth discussion. Dialogue focused on gender and human rights, civil society's role in waging peace, ethnic conflict, forced migration in armed conflict, and forgiveness and memory, among other topics. Working groups continued discussions begun last year concerning the ethics of research, as well as ethnicity and national security.

The 2000 Research Symposium resulted in:

  • the establishment of ethical guidelines for researchers in the field of gender and peace building to encourage responsible research.
  • the gathering of key thinkers in the field with representatives from over 50 universities to promote dialogues, joint initiatives, and research in gender and peace building.
  • an international database of scholars, practitioners, and activists representing over 30 countries to serve as a tool for academic collaboration.
  • an extensive on-line bibliographic database with nearly 1,000 entries, including resources on gender, conflict, and peace-building to facilitate the work of scholars.
  • an extensive database of research questions for student and scholar research and inquiry.

Over the next year participants will be further developing and circulating the Guidelines for Ethical Research. This project was inspired by the work of Simona Sharoni and continues to develop with the input of concerned scholars and delegates worldwide. Other projects include developing Web-based resources for researchers and working on making the bibliography interactive. A network of universities worldwide is in the planning stages.

Rita Manchanda, local partner representative for India/Pakistan, has graciously agreed to lead the Research Symposium in 2001. An accomplished researcher and author in the field of peace building and human security, Manchanda will contribute greatly to the success and dynamism of this program by bringing in more scholars based outside of the US.
