Turkish Cypriot

Sulen Karabacak is a lawyer and peace activist who holds the position of Special Advisor to the President on Legal Affairs. In this role, she participates in the ongoing negotiations for a lasting peace in Cyprus. She has worked in the NGO community, and has brought this experience and these sensibilities to bear in her current position. She previously worked as a law instructor at Eastern Mediterranean University, the International American University in Kryenia, and Girne American University, where she was also Acting Dean.

Ms. Karabacak's peace-building activities include:

  • researching the situation in Cyprus and possible solutions that would bring a resolution to the Cyprus issue at PRIO International Peace Institute;
  • drafting white papers on conflict resolution and related issues;
  • representing individuals at the European Court of Human Rights on a range of issues, including investigating the disappearances of Turkish Cypriots who have been missing since the conflict began; and
  • advocating for the inclusion of women in law and government.
