Effie Namazi

Iran

With the election of pro-reform President Khatami in 1997, Iranians, particularly youth, began to call more publicly for change while remaining committed to nonviolence. Effie Namazi has been a freelance consultant in gender and development for the past decade, coordinating with United Nations agencies in Egypt and non-governmental organizations in Iran. Before entering the field of gender and development, Ms. Namazi worked in organization and management, at one point as an adviser to the minister of state. She has done extensive research on women’s and youth issues.

Ms. Namazi’s peace-building activities include:

  • helping to organize informal meetings on women, youth, and peace with the objective of drafting strategies and projects to promote tolerance and understanding, particularly among the younger generation; and
  • participating as a consultant and seminar manager at Nairobi’s UNICEF Regional Office for the African Workshop on the Convention on the Rights of the African Child—the substantive part of the seminar examined the protection of children and women in armed conflict.
